You
may not believe what you're about to read: today,
you can restore almost any 1966 through 1974 A, B
or E-Body Mopar®! That's pretty revolutionary!
There are a couple gaps in the A-Body line but
many of these parts are being tooled up for
future parts offerings.
If you were building a race car, you tend to
start planning by looking at the engine or engine
and chassis which would include the general
drivetrain, front and rear suspensions and
brakes. In a resto project, most of us would
start by looking at the body. So we'll start with
the basic body aspects.
Let's start with some general background. In the
Mopar Performance Parts Catalog click here there are 22
pages of authentic restoration parts, which is
50+ percent more than in the 2007 catalog.
However, there are thousands of part numbers in a
complete car, so we've selected the 1966–1974
A/B/E-Body cars and additionally will focus on
“body” aspects, but not just sheet metal.
The Mopar restoration program moved up into the
big leagues in 2006–2007 when they brought out
the first sheet metal parts: fenders and quarter
panels. This amounted to about eight part
numbers. Mopar added the 1971 through 1974 E-Body
variations and then added some B-Body parts.
Today there are about 40 part numbers in the new
catalog with more coming.
On the front of the vehicle, you have a stylish
part called the grille. Typically there is more
than one part to the grille. You can have the
main grille, like the 1969 Road Runner (B-Body)
P5153427 and then the headlight bezels P5253417.
Although not technically part of the grille, the
front valance, like P5153388 1970–1971
Challenger, fits in the same area, just below the
grille.
Around the outside of the body's basic sheet
metal there are many smaller pieces that fit into
the general category of trim or moldings. These
parts tend to be unique to the specific model
like die-cast emblems for the GTX (P3680160), 440
(P3613278) or the 1970 Dodge Super Bee
(P2998749). Mopar shows nearly a complete line in
the latest MP catalog click here. There are
also some decals that could fit in the trim group
like the 440+6 hood decal P2998896 (Plymouth),
Six Pack P3412423 (Dodge) or the 1968 Plymouth
Road Runner decals: P4022410 (left) P4022411
(right). Mopar offers many other decals—a photo
of each is shown in the MP catalog
Other trim parts including rocker sill plates are
available for the 1970–74 Dodge Challenger and
Plymouth Barracuda (P2879600). Additionally,
there are right and left 1970–74 Dodge Challenger
R/T Hood Scoop inserts (P5153394) along with a
dual scoop Rallye hood (P5153393). A front
valance is also available for the 1970–71
Challenger P5153388, 1968–69 Charger P5153407,
and 1970 and 1972–74 Barracuda P5153415.
And if you need door handles, they're available
for 1970–74 Challengers and Barracudas, P3760215
(right), P3760215 (left); and 1968–70
B-Body/1968–75 A-Body, 03454390 (right) and
03454391 (left).
Many resto-radiator hoses, like the 1969 383/440-
4/440-6 B-Body lower hose P2863245 and P2806186
upper hose for the 1967–1971 383/440/426H with
the 26" radiator, are available from Mopar. These
look much nicer than the typical universal hoses
serviced once the car/engine is over
10-years-old. Photos of each pre-formed hose are
available in the Mopar Performance Parts
catalog.
There are many parts that could fit into the
category of lenses such as front marker lamps,
parking lamps, side marker lights and rear tail
lamps. Mopar offers parking lenses for the
1968–1969 Road Runner and GTX (P5153428).
We did not cover the interior trim parts because
of space limitations, but there are several
available. We're sure we may have missed some
parts in the overall structure like the outer
wheelhouse P5153423 (left) P5153424 (right) for
the 1970–1974 Barracuda and the outer wheelhouse
P5153433 (left) P5153434 (right) for the
1968–1970 B-Body Road Runner/GTX.
In the past, whether the enthusiast was building
a race car or a restoration project, if the
vehicle was 25 to 30 years old, or older, then
they tended to have a parts car, and in many
cases two parts cars. Today, those older parts
cars and basic beaters can be made into beautiful
project cars with new parts that include NEW
sheet metal!
